Anything that is "Not Negotiable" as it applies to checks means they cannot be cashed over the counter, but must be deposited into a payee's cheque or savings account. This is to prevent a third person from trying to cash the check. For example, you cannot endorse a Non-negotiable check.

It depends entirely on where the check is from. The poster mentioned that it is an international check. Alot of US residents write non-negotiable when they mean VOID. If the check is from Australia or New Zealand, it is entirely possible that the writer just meant that the check is only for the recipient. (see link below)

You cannot cash ANY check with the notation "not negotiable' on it. It's not a legal check.
