What does an electrolyte do in a battery? What determines the current of a battery?

The electrolyte allows ions to move inside the battery, to balance up charges created when electrons move in the external circuit.
The current a battery produces depends on what the electrodes are made of (the further apart in the reactivity series, the greater the voltage, so the greater the current can be), the resistance of the external circuit and how good the design of the battery is - it should have a low internal resistance.

Provides the pathway for the current. Current is determined by potential difference and resistance of the cell.
