I need to buy more tetras because they are schooling fish and one of mine died last night, but if I go to the pet store and just buy one should I get another to "keep it company" coming to a new tank? I know it sounds stupid but I'm just wondering if buying them in pairs is better for them. Like, to keep them from stressing out too much.

I have 5 neons now, and 4 zebra danios. My other tetras are in pairs, but that's because I got them at a different pet store. The store is 20 minutes away, so next time I'm out I'll get a few more zebras and some other ones. My tank is 20 gallons.

You can add them one at a time without an issue, and the pet store will tell you anything to sell you a few more.

Whether you buy more then one depends on how many you have in your tank now, and how much room you have for more fish. One thing for certain - when it comes to schooling fish, the more the merrier. I don't keep them in groups of less then 6 myself, and tend to more often keep them in 12's.

a house freezerbag would be suited for short journeys. whilst i purchase new fish I constantly shop the breather bags they grant because of the fact it extremely is greater suited for the fish. yet do no longer tension, maximum fish are hardier than human beings anticipate. in case you won't have the capacity to get a freezerbag then ask him/her for one. He/she would have the capacity to't bodily tension you to take it without adequate kit to attain this. additionally, do you have a great adequate and cycled tank at residing house? If no longer you will could set up a tank and upload ammonia to the water to verify the micro organism interior the clear out and flow away it for a week or greater (based how great the tank is). this could preclude the fish loss of existence on you because of the fact the fluctuating cycle circumstances might properly be very risky to fish. it extremely is like putting a human in room packed with gas before you have waited for it to air out - they might stay to tell the story, yet why risk it?

That is probably a good idea. If the pet store is less than 10 minutes away, don't worry about it. If the drive is any longer than 10 minutes, get one to keep it company.

schooling fish should be bought in odd numbers. How big is your tank? A five to ten gallon tank should be fine holding about 5-7 tetras and maybe a couple of small catfish. Rule of thumb is an inch of adult size fish per gallon of tank. So little fish like tetras can have a few more.

I like to buy schooling fish in pairs or more because sometimes I have had this happen where if you only get one, they wont join the other fish for sometime. If you buy them in groups at least they have the others purchased at the same time. :) hope this helps.

no not really, if it comes down to overstocking your tank it isnt worth it.

They are schooling, but they can live alone, and certainly a car ride home isnt a long time being seperate from a group.
