During the school holidays, the traffic level during rush hour drops through the floor. Doesn't it make more sense to discourage parents from driving their little darlings to school instead of charging people for driving, when they've already been taxed on fuel & road fund licence, plus had to pay for an MOT?
Surely a better option would be re-work the way parents choose their child's school. It's ludicrous to have a child attending a school miles from his or her home, and in 20 years of travel I have never come across this in any other country. If there is a disparity in school standards then the government should be addressing this to remove the need to send children to schools miles from home, not charging people for commuting. Does anyone else think children should attend their local schools only? If not, why not?

I think it's absolutely amazing. When I was at school you went to the nearest one - end of story.

If you want to take your child to the school of your choice - fine, that's a parents perogative but move house as well!!

I think parents should be able to choose which school their child attends, however I agree with you that there needs to be something done to bridge the gap between the levels of education recieved in different schools, which would have the knock on effect of ensuring the local school is as good as any other.

As for children walking to school, I think it is a must. I am a driver myself and have two young children at school. I only drive when I need to go on to somewhere else. If I am not in a hurry then we walk and my kids never complain. (well almost never) We walk more often than we take the car and it is a good bonding experience for parents and kids as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle.
My kids school recently had walk to school week, where the children got stickers for walking to school and I was horrified at how many children didn't get any stickers when they live less than a mile away and I know that at least one parent doesn't work. Pure lazyness.

no i think children should be able to attend whatever school they like however im with you on the school runs -our schools are a nitghtmare with people dropping kids off and the majority if not all could either walk or are on the bus route-most of the kids i know at my school get picked up by car and they live within 10-15 mins walking time away-i also live 20 mins away and i make sure my kids walk whether its cracking the flags or thick in snow-its healthier for all round

The problem is that in some area I have lived in the local schools have been closed and so the children have to travel. There isn't always a school bus on the routes. These days it isn't safe to put 5 year olds on public transport alone.

A lot of parents drive their children to school because they are on their way to work. The children go to differ net schools than their siblings. Some schools have good reputations and some bad, so because it is inconvenient for you you want everyone to go to the nearest school. On the other hand the atmosphere of a very good school is not one in which your child will thrive in, do you expect a parent to ignore that if they can do better. There is no easy solution.

Parents should take their kids to whatever school they wish.

Placing such restrictions on people is not necessary. If traffic is bad, people will be less likely to travel unless it is important to them.

A similar argument could be made such that people taking their kids to school take priority because kids are so important, so you need to stay off the road.

Either argument is total garbage. People should make decisions about their driving time and distance based on their own priorities.
