Today - Brian Westbrook and Marc Bulger. Both play at very high levels, but for some reason never get the respect they deserve. Westbrook is amoung the top running backs in yards from the line of scrimmage the past few years, and he only has one Pro Bowl appearance. Bulger has led the rams offense to finish in the top 10 in the NFL every year since he became the starter. When Bulger got hurt in 05, the Rams went 6-10. Each other year, they were at least in the mix for a wildcard spot.

All time - I'm gonna go with Jim Marshall. Marshall, the Vikings co-captain throughout his career, started a remarkable 282 straight regular-season games, which is an NFL record. He once even took the field after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning his gun. A defensive end, he racked up 133 sacks, recovered an NFL record 29 fumbles. Marshall's No. 70 was recently retired by the Vikings.

Honorable menions: Any offensive lineman. Also Bob Hayes - the one time fastest man in the world. His stats are not that great, but teams had to develop zone defenses to cover him because no one could match his speed.

The most underrated star today is LB Zach Thomas because he's the leader of a strong Miami defense. He always finishes top 5 in the NFL for tackles, but doesn't get enough credit for it. The most underrated of all-time is WR Andre Reed because he played in the same era as Jerry Rice, but put up very good numbers also while Rice got all the attention.

call me ignorant, but how can someone be both a star, and underrated?

However, Westbrook probably is the most underrated player right now in the nfl, and I would have to say that Tom Rathman, 49ers fullback, was the most underrated all time, at least as far back as my memory goes. Rathman finished his NFL career with 2,020 rushing yards, 320 receptions for 2,684 yards, five kickoff returns for 103 yards, and 34 touchdowns. Not really HOF numbers, but remember, a fullback spends a LOT of time blocking. Without Rathman, and his ability to catch out of the backfield, would the 49ers still have been so dominant during his time with them?

I think the most underrated person playing today is Brian Westbrook. He is an all purpose back who when allowed can run for over a thousand yards as well as have anywhere from 700 to 1000 yards in receptions as well as score 15 or more TD's a year. He is just as good at LT but has been on a team that believes in spreading the ball and not depending on one player to do everything.

All Rookies, who get signing bonuses, they take up too much of a bad teams cap and they are unproven.

Art Monk, when he retired he had nearly all the records, but never gets the credit until Hall of Fame talk begins.
