A Friend of mine was staying with her baby at my house to get away from her bad realationship. In the morning I was off to work and she was waiting for her mom to come get her. I told her to lock all doors and then go out the back locking it behind her. Well a week went by and I went to use my laptop it was missing. Came to find out her mom never picked her up. One of the girls I work with and her thug boyfriend came to get her. My friend says they only came in to help her gather her things and bring them to the car, (this gave him the perfect chance to easily grab to laptop on the way out to the car without being seen. When I approached my co-worker of her theiving boyfriend she1st denied it. I told her I had it video ( which I didn't) The next day she wrote me a note saying I was right, she saw my laptop yesterday at his house, but she wants nothing to do with it. I don't know where he lives exactly except it is a good 45min drive. Weeks have gone by, How do I prove he did

Since the crime was committed in your house, you call the police in your city, not where they went.

It does not matter if weeks have gone by. First you have to file a police report to proceed..... there is no way around it. While doing so having the make, model. a laptop case, a power cord, the box it came in, owners manual, any disks that came with it or even a printout of when you registered with Norton, Dell or whatnot (which you can get online) would help. Did you pay for it with a check, credit or debit card? You can easily obtain these records. Not necessary to have any of this but it would be helpfull.

For the purposes of workplace relations you could tell the person who stayed w. you that if it is not returned, no questions asked that you will take this to the next level. But rest assured the laptop will disappear.

Do you have the note? You helped her and she showed disrespect by lying to you about what what was going on. Your coworker did as well....... all in all something is wrong.

Lodge a police report and name your coworker. She could have previously fixed all of this. She has seen your computer so did she not have the chance to tell them to just give it back because of legal and potential work problems? "I want nothing to do with it? shows much. Think about what the thug guy may do later regarding her..... who knows.

Police report. They will interview her and she will give up the info. Nobody can blame you in anyway for just wanting your stuff back. The police in the other county will find this person and go to his house.... and if you do it right it can be explained that if they surrender your property you might not press charges.

Bottom line is that in stealing it they assumed you would not have the wherewithall to follow it through to the end. Get mad and get the police involved.

Name the person you were helping out as she is the person who was responsible for your household. I'm betting she knows who stole it.

You are not going to be able to prove who stole the laptop, but maybe the law enforcement agency where this person lives can stop by their place and pay them a little visit. If you are happy to get the laptop back, perhaps they can ask for it back on your behalf.

You will need to find out who has jurisdiction wherever these people live (police? sheriff?), and once you do that you can give them a call. They will advise you from that point on.

You also may be able to go to small claims court, but try the law enforcement option first.
