Your system is getting to the point where things are going to start wearing out. Most hard drives have a life cycle of about 5 years. After that they can go anytime. Also, anything else that turns, such as fans and optical drives are coming pretty close to there expected life cycle. It just might be time to upgrade to a new system.

Simply put: Until you can no longer use it.

You're "supposed" to have a computer until you need to upgrade. If your 6 year-old PC works fine with what you need it to do, there's no need to upgrade. Luckily for you, if your needs are few, then even the cheapest of computers would prove a proper replacement for your aging computer.

Mine's 4 years old and still doing great. I had one for 7 years until I needed the upgrade for more power (for graphic design and gaming as well as Win XP).

Upgrade only if you're unsatisfied with it and you need things that the current machine cannot handle (games, media, design, etc.)

as long as you want i've had the same desktop for 4 years i just put new parts in it every once and a while to make it better and faster my four year old computer could keep up and beat most off the shelf computers not to mention it's useually cheaper to by the parts for the computer than a whole new one because i use ebay to get most of my stuff

If the machine is still doing everything you want you do not have to upgrade ot change it. I personally do not change machines until something happens that requires me to change it such as new features I want, New case, New graphics card, etc.

if it is still working properly and still filling the needs that you require from it, keep it forever.
