the police, fire and military have always been government controlled. they did not take control of those like they have school systems, social security, and now the health care system.

Socialism appears to be a natural extension of a democratic system. Politician want re-elected so they promise more giveaways. FDR was re-elected 3 times because of his giveaway programs, yet he's proven one our best presidents because of his handling of WWII.
It takes a lot of will power to hold back socialism, and it appears we've lost ours.....

Actually FDR pushed you into Socialism. Today’s Democrats are just continuing the tradition under the banner of “progress.” Because it took so long for either Republicans or Democrats to understand that the US had become a Socialist government the institution was allowed to grow so many roots that reversing it too quickly or radically will do as much, if not more, damage than leaving it in place. Americans for too long assumed that Socialism meant Communism or Marxism when in actuality those were just forms of Socialism, much as Catholicism and Protestantism are forms of Christianity.
The government Federal, State and local is the largest employer in the nation. More than 70% of the US economy is tied to government spending. And private property rights have all but disappeared in the name of Environmentalism.
If you want to change it, you have to start at the local and State levels. Put these areas of your government back on track with 19th century Liberalism and the Federal government will have no choice but to acquiesce.

Because they believe that is the proper way to "promote the general welfare", which is stated as one of the main goals of the govt in the Preamble to the Constitution.
The Founding Fathers didn't specify an economic model in the constitution. They didn't say what the govt should or should not provide -- either because socialism never occurred to them, or because they choose to leave it up to each generation of voters.
About the only thing the govt does better than local or independent control is interstate highways. Maybe the military. That's why I oppose big govt in all its forms.

Out military is a pretty good example of the government controlling something. I don't want that privatized. Oh and police and firemen. Things that are truly essential to living should be given to everyone if they can't afford it. Anything after that shod be private enterprise.

Wow. Cool! A lot of folks seem to understand that it is not total socialism to have the government provide defense against crime, terrorists, and sickness. They are all things that threaten us, and we should fight them collectively, but without outlawing private medical and security services for those who can afford them. Public services and private services can and do coexist.

does anyone have a problem with the govt handling the police or fire department - probably not.
because they are life and death organizations that can't be subject to for-profit mentality.
this is not a pro socialism agenda - it's common sense.
as most americans know very well...
by the way, i've never ever heard of anyone anywhere talking about govt control of the housing market.
