well I used to hate Barry Bonds as a lot of people do, but when I started reading up and seeing how many players were and possibly are on steroids, I don't hate him as much.
People's big deal is that it is clear that Bonds has used performance enhancing drugs and is in the process of breaking possibly the greatest record in baseball. Most of these records were set long before players had this much power and meant a lot more to showing how great the players were.
If you want to read a good book about steroids and its effect on baseball, you should read Jose Canseco's book "Juiced". It's very opinionated, but Canseco offers his perception on how McGwire was baseball's golden child and that he was not attacked by the media the way Jose was. I don't want to imply any racial favortism, but that could be why people don't hate on McGwire even now that its pretty clear he was on steroids when he broke the HR record.
Also, no one was making accusations of steroids when the McGwire-Sosa HR chase was happening, while steroids is on everyone's mind now during Bond's HR chase.
Those are just some of my thoughts on the subject, and also Bonds isn't liked by the media, while McGwire was. The media can influence everybody's thoughts.

You are right, steroids are a dark cloud hanging over the game and the media will not let it die. What is in the past is history, let it go. There is a new batch of young, clean superstars like Longoria, Braun, Wright, and as much parody as every and we are talking about Sammy Sosa. The Hall of Fame is a joke anyway. A bunch of writers, almost all have never play the game on any level higher that t ball, are suppose to tell us who is the greatest of all time. These baseball writers have no clue what it takes to be great, to hit a home run off the most dominant pitchers in the world, to stay on the nastiest slider you have ever seen and hit it the other way. Let the former players vote, then we will see who was great. I don't care if any one of these players make the HoF, I am concerned about what is happening right now, and right now there is a pipeline of fresh young talent storming baseball. That is what we are suppose to be talking about not Ped users from a decade ago. Anyway, the real question is why hasn't all 104 names been released? ARods name was released right before sweeps week, now Sammy's name comes up right before summer sweeps. Are they going to give us one name at a time two weeks before every season's sweeps? This has nothing to do with the sports media trying to protect or save baseball, its about ratings and sales. Sports media is ruining sports.

McGwire's evasiveness before Congress in March 2005 probably will cost him election to the Hall of Fame. Gary Sheffield used to be routinely booed in Boston for his implication in the Balco scandal. Shawn Merriman was suspended from the NFL last year for steroid use. A Diamondback pitcher retired last year when he was implicated in buying human growth hormone. Angels centerfielder Gary Matthews also allegedly ordered human growth hormone, but there has been little said about that. WWE wrestler Chris Benoit tested positive for steroids after he killed his family and himself a couple of weeks ago.
A majority of ballplayers? Absolutely not. A few bad apples. Clearly. Everybody outside of the city of San Francisco hates Barry and hopes he is indicted and arrested in the next few days before he can break Hank Aaron's record. In the unlikely event that that does not occur, we will be relegated to cheering for A-Rod, the words are painful to type, to beat Bonds' steroid *** record.

It's seriously difficult to say who took steroids of HGH during the same time Barry did. They were not banned or illegal. Only after the HR chases did someone get the bat out of their a** and start testing.
I think it's just jealousy from fans not living in SF. We have fans here in SF that hate Barry, but I think it's because they have no life, are bandwagon fans or are not intelligent enough to know that steroids will not enhance your performance in baseball.
He and others did it "legally" and should not be nailed to a cross for it. Let them do whatever they want to help the team. We are not their parents to tell grown adults what to do.

Not EVERYONE hates him. He is just the most famous of the players. Fame often brings noteriety. To me he is just another trained entertainer, nothing more. Hate, I reserve that severe emotion.
Youar opinion is that it is because of his color. Persecuted for his color. Obviously you have never seen a ball game. People of color are predominant. You need to observe more then talk. But, then, you could not cry about racism. To see racism here takes and awful long stretch, enough to herniate you. Find out whose record he breaking. Now what color is that man? Why would you say no one hates McGuire? How do you know?

People hate Bonds because he is about to break the most prestigious record in sports. People loved Hank Aaron and he is known as the one and only 'Home Run King'. But now that Bonds is about to break his record, and allegedly is tied up in some steroid mess, people hate him for it.
Yes, plenty of players have been accused of juicing, but none of them will be remembered in 50 years, and their accomplishments are just pedestrian. Bonds, however, will forever remain in the history books as a top home run hitter (atleast until A-Rod overtakes him in about 8 years) and his tarnished legacy will be forver remembered.

I am sure it was the color of his skin. After all, Hank Aaron was just so white. Did you catch the morning news. There may be perjury charges brought against Bonds. Just like there were against, Palmeiro and Rose, two other men of color.
O.J. was defended by you too, right? And Barrack Hussein Obama is the only one running for President? Oh great Oprah, lead us out of our valley of whiteness.

Jason Giambi admitted to taking steroids. So did Jose Canseco. There are a number of other players suspected of steroid use.
