They're not that picky - it's not like the "Soup Nazi" or anything.

Just figure out what you want BEFORE it's your turn. When you're up, be direct, polite, and speak in English.

These aren't mean people, they just serve 2,000 people a day and want keep the line moving.

If you're really that concerned about "ordering like a philly native", I'm pretty sure it's Geno's that has directions on how to order next to their menu board.

Yeah, there are no subs in Philadelphia! The lunch meat type sandwich is a hoagie and If you're doing steak, it's a steak sandwich, a cheesesteak, or you can get a steak hoagie, which replaces the lunch meat with steak. If you say sub, they'll definitely know you are a tourist.

From what I understand from folks who live in that neighborhood, Geno's, which is across the street, is better than Pat's. As for the "proper way to order," all that stuff is just hype. I've lived here all my life and I've never ordered in the "proper way," and I've never been turned away or embarrassed by them. Have fun!

You order each cheesteak (it's not a cheese steak hoagie, by the way and it's definitely not a sub) with 2 words

The type of cheese (american, provolone, whiz) and with if you want onions and without if you don't want onions.

PS. The cheesesteaks are better at Geno's across the street.

Just to be real clear (those above mostly got it). When the guy in the window yells "NEXT" and he means you (you could be about eight people from the window), you yell back one of the following:

Cheesesteak with onions: Cheese, with!

Cheesesteak with no onions: Cheese, without!

Plain steak with onions: Plain, with!

Plain steak, no onions: No idea - I don't think anyone ever ordered this.

For fun, order a cheeseburger. An unsuspecting out of town friend once this (I failed to properly coach him). The counterman yelled back (remember, we were eighth in line) "You want a cheeseburger, go over to Geno's - how do you want you steak!?"

First of all, you don't say "Subs". You'll get beat up. They're call Hoagies (hO-Geez).

Secondly, Pat's king of steaks specializes in Cheesesteaks. I hope you speak English well, because Pat's recently put up a sign that htey will not cater to customers who can't speak English.

Why would you worry about the proper way to order anything?

It sounds like you are worried about offending them! Look, what they want is your money. That's how they stay in business. There is no place for political correctness in the cheesesteak business. And so what if they look at you funny because you said things in the wrong order! You are still going to get the same steak. They didnt become Pat's King of Steaks because of how people order their food---it's the food. Their steaks are awesome. Good enjoy the food without worrying about the politically correct nazis running your life.

Same goes for Starbucks, by the way. If you tell them you want a large frappucino with mocha flavoring with skim milk and no whipped cream.......even though you didnt speak it right--they KNOW what you want. And if you ever get a little twit at Starbucks who corrects you for not ordering properly (like i have far too many times), ask for a manager and get them fired. 8)

I suggest you try Pat's one night and if your in Philly longer than that try Geno's too. I like Geno's better. You should try their cheese fries too.

Just tell them you want a cheese steak with ............

Never say cheese steak with everything BUT.......

Enjoy!
