Reading the book is almost always better than the movie. Movies have to be more concise due to time constraints, so they tend to leave a lot out.
Also, a movie usually reflects one person's (usually the screenplay writer or the director) point of view. With a book, you can form your own opinions about the story.

Read the book before you watch the movie. If the movie is true to the book, you love being able to follow along--and you'll find that you'll be a critic too, of all the things that were changed, and those left out. There is no way to make a movie containing all the subtleties of the characters thoughts, feelings. The written descriptions will tell you what the characters are thinking of the area.
Movies are a good mindless way to get the basic story, you may have to work at reading a book, but OH what an adventure!

Usually, the book. Then the movie, but the movie is often disappointing--like the new movie on Narnia missed the genius of the book altogether. Movies usually can't put in as much as the book and so a lot gets lost--but when the movie is well done, it can be a delight--especially if you already know the book.
The exception is Shakespeare--his plays were written to be acted--it's easier to get into him through the media of theatre or film first, especially for moderns. And that would go for any other play, as well. See it first, then read it.

If you read a book you will imagine and make your own picture of things, and how people look etc. I did anyways. And I have to admit I'm usually disappointed in the movie afterwards because there is either stuff missing, things changed, or I'm just disappointed period. But I don't know if it's better to watch the movie first either:)

The book, definitely. The book explains and describes things that the movie can only hint at, and stays true the author's original creation.
Watching the movie certainly has great value - a picture is worth a thousand words, and it can be breathtaking to see your imagination come to life - but I think if you have a choice of which to enjoy, or enjoy first, then the book is always the better choice.

Generally the book is better because they sacrifice a lot in a movie and sometimes sanitize the plot.
EXCEPTION: The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movies integrated minor plots found in the appendices into the story and cut out the dead weight that Tolkien had left in the story. Vast improvement over the books.

I think reading the book is better. Reading the book before seeing the movie does not ruin it for me.

Reading the book.
Movies almost always condense the story line due to time and budget constraints and you are seeing someone else's interpretation of the book.
By reading the book you get the full story line and can imagine your own version of what is happening. A side benefit is that reading also requires more activity in the brain, which maintains creativity and intelligence.
I do miss the popcorn though.
