An animated image (can be gif or jpg but sometimes a jpg is so large that it is too slow to be helpful) is really more than one image. The images are very similar with minor changes. For example, you may see a puppy with his tail on the left which then appears on the right and then back to the left. It suggests the tail is wagging. In fact you are seeing two pictures alternate back and forth. They are very similar so you only notice the tail wag.

You want the animation to look realistic so these tend to be pretty simple with minor changes. The loading and swithching have to be very fast so large images and jpg images can be problematic. Spinning pinwheels, tumbling bears, turning wheels on cars, flags waving in the wind are all such examples.

What you would do is load the jpegs into a gif creator.

make animated gifs in corel, photoshop, or fireworks, or even flash (can export animated gifs)
