The problem with old junkers is that they probably run slow, have limited memory, have a built-in slow graphics capability, and have a small disk drive. That combo makes them a poor gaming machine.

Generally you want a newer computer with a ton of RAM and a great video card (with a ton of memory) to run the latest games.
You could turn it into a NAS drive. It would probably be perfect for that. You could even run Linux to make faster. Install web and ftp servers and you'll be able to access your files (photo, music, docs, and so on) across the internet (with security).

Get two or three more junker computers.
Download and LINUX OS for free.
Set up parallel processing on your machines.
Use the internet for your games combining your PCs' processing ability.

You might consider installing a variant of Linux (or almost any other OS than Windows) and get more life out of it.
Windows is a memory/CPU hog - so if it ran well with an version of Windows, chances are excellent it will run well with any of:
http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're
all free.

Sure, but it depends on what kinds of games you want to play. If you're content with playing relatively simple games that aren't demanding on your processor, then sure you can definitely play a lot of games.
If you want to get the old PC up to speed to play the latest games then it depends on your budget.
Sorry that was a bit of a vague answer.
