the only way i know would be to start from scratch and go and get the windows xp operating system disc.

You will need to reinstall XP from CD boot rather than installing in the existing Vista install. If needed, adjust your BIOS to use the CD drive before the hard disk. If you are using a retail version of Windows XP, make sure you download any drivers for your hardware prior to installing XP, particularly for the network card.
