I've trouble identifying who's gay and who's not. Are there any characteristics or any gay traits which I can pick up from any guy walking down the street?

A lot of people have been asking whether I would care or not. The thing is I'm gay. So that's why I post this question.

No. You can not tell someone is gay from watching them walk down the street. Get out into the world and mix with people. Yes there are some traits, but these paint a very large picture and you must put the pieces together, even then you could be wrong. Sometimes asking is not a good idea. Maybe I can elaborate on some of the traits I pick up on. Intelligent, professional, cautious, pays a lot of attention to detail in whatever they do, always has a hobby, takes care of themselves, loves music, eats nutritional healthy foods, works out and maintains a fairly nice body, loves to stay in shape as if it is a religion, nurturing soul, spiritual not necessarily religious, well kept, great fashion sense, obcessive about being clean, and always well organized. Find these traits and you will find a person who bases thier love and sexuality on these traits and not necessarily gender. That is the best I can do and even that is not always accurate. But, hay if you find someone that has the traits above, send them my way.

Well in my opinion it probably doesn't matter if someone is straight or gay to me because it really doesn't affect me because i know that I'm not gay. While some gay people do have some general characteristics that some of them follow, there is no rule set in stone saying "if you do this, you're gay" and vice versa for straight. The only way to tell is if you ask them or if they really make it obvious. Just remember that only 10% of the population is homosexual so most people on the street would be straight. And it's also hard to tell by first glance because there are many people who dress differently but they are straight. It usually takes a while to even get a hint if they're gay or not.

Works for me every time but some of the straight one's do get a bit put out. :-)
Seriously, I can tell. Not just when someone is being openly femme, and not always 100% of the time, but polish up your non-verbal communication skills and you'll be able to do it too. There's something about gay men (and women) and their body language and behaviour patterns that gives it away. Nothing to do with stereotyping, or gender characteristics, just pure instinctive behaviour that all human beings do involuntarily and unconsciously.
It's a bit like when you can tell if someone is happy or sad or angry before they say anything just by looking at them but alot more subtle.
Women and gay men in particular are good at picking up on non-verbal communication. That's why it tends to be mainly women and gay men who have gaydar.

And there is no certain characteristic that works, trust me!
I used to smile at sexy men on the street. If they smile back, they are probably gays.

You can't, you have to ask, or see them making out with another guy. Loads more men are bisexual than gay anyway.

Life would be so much simpler that way, wouldn't it? Alas, you can't tell. Period. Any more than you can tell someone's religion, occupation, or taste in music. Why do you need to know anyway?

some guys are easy to pick up and some are hard to find you just have to talk to the person and get to know them... that is why there are so many categories of gay men.... *****, sissy, butch, mas, fem

No there are no clear signs besides them telling you that they are and of course finding their stash of porn. But just by looking at someone and observing their actions there's no single way of determining their sexuality.
