i want to do a puppetry work shop with children aged 5-12 and their parents but do not know where to get the materials

I would go with simple projects. You don't want to make the projects too complicated so that they can't leave the workshop with one or more puppets in their hands.

These sites are faves of mine and both use typical childrens craft materials that are easy to find and generally inexpensive.

I love this lady's site, she tests all the projects with her own children and uses a lot of cheaper craft materials you probably already have in your home...

You don't mention what kinds of puppets they will be making. This site has material listings for finger puppets. It also contains other interesting ideas for puppets. Take a look.
