The male goldfish will be chasing the female all over they tank, you can identify the male by the tubercles appearing on their gill plate. This looks like white spot but the appears on the gill plates and pectoral fins.

Ands also on males their anal vent tends to concave (sunk in) and on the female their anal vent or breeding tube during mating season is convex (sticking out).

Attached is an image of both male and female, the male is on the left and female on the right. http://www.chinagoldfish.net/text/gongmu.jpg

Hopes this helps.

Hi Mysty~ Someone posted a very similar question a bit earlier and I answered it. Maybe it was you and you added that your fish were in a 30 tank. Your two goldfish are in a properly sized tank as long as they are the only fish in the tank. When goldfish mate, the male will "chase" the female until she spreads her eggs. He will then fertilize the eggs and then go on about his usual business of scouting the tank for food. Goldfish seldom breed in tanks, especially the size tank you have. If the fish are breeding, you should notice white "pimple" like bumps around the his gills. If you don't see these bumps, its more likely you simply have an aggressive goldfish. Generally, goldfish get along "swimmingly" (pun intended), however, if your black moor was introduced to the tank more than a few weeks after the fan tail it may simply have been a dominant fish in its previous environment and is simply trying to establish the same role in your tank. If this doesn't apply in your situation, if the black moor is larger than the fan tail, it will tend to bully a smaller fish. If neither situation applies, you most likely just have a fish with a dominant and aggressive personality. Try rearranging the decorations in your tank or adding some new decor and/or plants. If you are still having problems, you might need to find a pet shop that will exchange the black moor for another fish. I've had problems with aggressive goldfish in the past, and have had to return fish. It will happen at times. Some fish, like some people, are bullies and there won't be much you can do about it short of putting them by themselves. If you can't bear to part with the fish, you may need to get a separate tank for the fish. A 10 gallon tank would be the minimum size as it's a fancy goldfish. Hope this helps

In addition to the tubercles the male gets on his gills and fin edges and the vent on the female becoming extended and belly becoming more rounded, the only other typical signs are one fish chasing another and/or bumping into the stomach of another. And, while these signs are fairly good signs of being ready to mate, even these signs don't necessarily mean that the fish are actually mating, because when males get the urge to mate and if there is no female around, they will chase and bump other males. Also, goldfish love to play and bumping is part of it. So, again, this isn't always a sign of mating. It is very difficult to sex goldfish and/or to determine whether they are mating.

I'm pretty sure that goldfish are egg layers.. the female will release the unfertilized eggs, then the male fertilizes them.. you should see a change in the eggs.. it would be a good idea to have on of the breeding box things for it or the larger fish will eat the babies.

I know there are some live barers.. (Like Molly's and Sharks), but I'm positive that goldfish have eggs.. I seem to recall having to clean unfertilized eggs off of my filter when I had a goldfish..
