Lightning is caused by static electric charges accumulating in separate air and cloud masses. When the level of charge difference reaches a certain point, the charges are equalized by an ionized path for a sudden electrical discharge.
Lightning has been observed on Jupiter. Theoretically, it would occur on any planet that has an atmosphere in which varying air masses move close to each other.

lightning does occur on other planets and it is caused by an electrical discharge in the atmosphere. a charge builds up due to many reasons and is eventually discharged as a lightning bolt. the reason for the saying 'lightning never strikes the same place twice' is that aftr this discharge it takes a long time for enough charge to be built up for another strike.

Just wanted to add that there is also lightning on Venus, however it never actually touches the ground at any point. Other than that it appears the question of what causes lightning has been answered.

Yes it happens on Jupiter.Lightning is caused by winds in the updraft rubbing off electrons and the charges accumulate and desire to get back to normal. The other part of the atoms has fallen to the earth where the opposite charge will accumulate and eventual u can get sufficient charge to jump to the ground to neutralize the Cage.

Lightening is caused by the amount of light increasing. Any time the amount of light increases, lightening occurs.
Also, setting aside part of a heavy load can result in lightening.

did you know that lightning comes from the eart, not from the sky!...in other words lightning is a big shock
