The prophecy, revealed in book 5 says that one who can kill the dark lord will be born at the end of July to parents who have three times defied Voldemort. This could have been Harry, or Neville Longbottom, but Voldemort didn't know the whole prophecy, so he decided it meant Harry, and wanted to kill him before he became a threat. Harry's parents tried to hold off Voldemort and protect their son, so Voldemort killed them so he could have a clear shot at Harry. The fact that his mother died to save him, incidentally, is the reason Harry survived the attack when he was a baby.

Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter because Snape overheard part of the prophecy that Professor Trelawny's told Dumbledore. However, he didn’t hear the whole thing, so when he told the Dark Lord the portion he did hear; the only 2 babies it could have meant were either Harry or Neville and by going after Harry, Voldemort sealed their fate making Harry the most powerful and well known wizard/baby of their age. Lily and James died needlessly, however, Lily’s love for her son saved his life until he turn 17, the age of maturity in the wizarding world. To finish it off, The Longbottoms were tortured into madness leaving Neville parentless as well.

Because they were a threat to Voldemort. Snape heard the part of the prophecy which states that Voldemort must kill Harry. And to get to Harry he had to get through his parents. But Lily's love saved Harry. It could have been Nevilles parents instead.

Dumbledore created an alliance years ago (the Order of the Phoenix when it first started)....and both of Harry's parents were on it. In the 5th book, you'll notice how the bad guys try and kill off those members.

Also because of the prophecy...Pettigrew sold out Harry's parents to Voldemort so V. could personally get rid of them.

Also, the bad guys dont like anyone who isnt purbred witches or warlocks and hope to rid all others.

They were trying to protect Harry from He Who Must Not Be Named (Lord Voldemort). They got killed by a curse Voldy cast, but Harry lived with only a scar to show for it. (hence "The Boy Who Lived")

Because Voldemort wanted to kill Harry, in accordance with Professor Trelawny's prophecy, and naturally his parents were getting in the way. Besides, his parents were goodguys, so Voldemort would have liked the chance to get rid of them anyway.
