i'm getting a 40-55 gallon tank with american cichlids. What are some cichlids that dont get too big (around 4-8in) and get along pretty well (i think that i want some fire mouth cichlids and 3 plecos)

Even in that size of a tank, you might only be able to keep one pair of cichlids. I've kept firemouths and convicts and as adults, a mated pair will kill/harass any others if present, even in a 55 gallon tank.

Your best option if you want to try more than one pair is to start with a male and female, let them mate, and keep the fry as a family group. With that many individuals growing up together, the aggression will be spread out among the individuals. But as they mature and begin to pair up, they will establish territories and harrass each other. You might be able to get two pairs from that brood to tolerate each other, if you use plants and driftwood to separate the tank into two territories where the sightlines are such that the fish won't be able to see each other. If the pairs still don't get along, you may need to use a tank divider.

If you're looking to get a common pleco, realize that these can get 18 inches, and be somewhat territorial themselves. I wouldn't add more than one.

Convict cichlids can be considered as "dwarf" cichlids, but they're South American cichlids. I'm unsure as to what "asst" is.

Convicts are fish that are ready to mate.
Once you get a hold of a male and female in the same tank, they can spawn endlessly.
They are good breeders and take care of their young.
Now unless you want all Convicts, you can do that.
Or, you can go with Jack Dempseys and Oscars.
Start with small Oscars because they will get big fast.
But Oscar are just pushing it in a 40-55 gal.
