I recently rented a home in central Davis and it was infested with cockroaches. I moved right out and now live in West Sacramento. We moved there due to my husband's job change and were hoping to buy a house there. Does all of Davis have this problem with roaches? It would be so convenient for us to live there since his job is there. I am traumatized though, and worry about buying a house there. Was this a fluke, or is it only a problem in Central Davis? What's to stop these little buggers from infesting other areas? Please tell me what area of Davis is known to be cockroach-free? There were 4 different species infesting that house, and the house was very clean and nice otherwise.

Maybe I phrased the question wrong. I asked this question hoping to reach someone who has experienced living in Davis, CA or still lives there.

There are cockroaches everywhere on the planet but Antarctica.
Different species feed on different things but for the most part even the cleanest home has everything a self-respecting roach would want -- food, water, and shelter. Even a spotlessly clean home can be infested. They'll happily dine on wallpaper glue, the glue in furniture and engineered construction materials and a myriad of other things. And if their preferred food supply should run out, they'll happily eat each other.
Edit: We understood your question well enough. The correct answer is that the damn things are EVERWHERE, not just Davis. And just because you don't see any does NOT mean that you don't have any. For each ONE that you do see, there are 300 more behind the walls that you don't see!

I live in Wisconsin and I haven't come into many homes with cockroaches. Altough when I was 8 years old my mother bought this one house and man it was literally infested with them! You turn the lights out for one minute in the kitchen and they were everywhere!!! You click the light back on you'd see them flying and what not...it was horrible. I was so frightened to go into the kitchen at night. To this day I can't stand those buggers!!! do alot of exterminating...I would have an exterminator come through monthly or twice a month if you can afford to exterminate. They can locate them better than you can and advise you on what to do going forward. Keep your house especially the kitchen cleaner than the the toilet! they say toilet water is cleaner than most water...take your trash out nightly...when they find no goodies around they will understand they are not wanted and leave...

Cockroaches have been around for millions of years longer than have humans. They exist everywhere in the United States. Those of us in colder climates are fortunate that the cold weather tends to kill them off once annually, but they still manage to return.
If they are in the area, they will infest any place they can infest. Here in Wisconsin, they have been found on occasion in nearly new houses.
They are insidious creatures, and can gain entrance through the tiniest of cracks and openings in the structure. Their bodies are flexible and they can change their shape as needed to slide through openings.
One can only hope they do not move in. If they do, they must be exterminated as quickly as possible.

cockroaches are everywhere, its the food they seek.
If a place is dirty with food debris allover, you will get CRs & ants as well.
Try to clean up the food particals under the sinks, stuffed in baseboards near sinks, overs & stoves and anywhere in the kitchen area. They mostly like the dark spaces under the sinks and when there is no-one at the home, so they can roam.
when you leave to work and no-one will be in the home for 6hours, set off a bomb under the sinks and nearby cupboards and this may rid you of the present problem...otherwise you may have to call in an exterminator.
I'm sure arnie swartzaneggar will be available soon. LOL

Some places just have them. Not sure what area of CA Davis is in, but if it doesn't get that cold during the winter, there will be more of them because they don't get killed off as easily. Also, if you have a lot of trees, you are more prone to them than someone who doesn't have a lot of trees in their yard. Older homes are more prone to them, too, as it's easier for them to get into older homes (cracks, etc.) and in most cases, they are living in the walls. Once they are reproducing in the walls, it's very difficult to get rid of them.
