Is it okay for someone to ask you for your social security number to verify who you are for your records at their institution?

Yes, it is....

They can always ask. They cannot require you to provide it, but they are also under no obligation to deal with you if you don't.

It's a perversion of the law that has become common practice.

What kind of school we talking about here? I know when I was going to a local college they'd ask me my personal information so they could pull up my records. But I'm use to that as I am in the military but you have the authority to say well try using my name or birthdate. But no it is not illegal for any institution to ask for your soc sec but you gotta be the judge on who you hand it out to.

Schools tend to do this because they know that your ssi# won't be duplicated and its another way to verify that you are truly who you say you are. If you are getting financial aide you will have to give out your ssi# as well, BUT you can use your student ID # for making your schedule or logging onto the college system, or taking tests. I don't like anyone having my ssi# but it makes sense as long as they use it for record keeping.

Yes it is. You can ask them to issue you a student ID number instead. I have done this.

Yes, it's legal. You have the right to refuse.
