Well, do Republicans have a conscience, which in fact is the basis for morality?
The Republicans may or may not understand the gravity of what is happening as a result of Bush policy, but more importantly they do not care.
The fact that the Administration is in the process of attempting to morph every facet the United States government into a self-serving entity is of no consequence to them. Since they suffer no consequences and also read the kinds of unquestioning juvenile postings that are generated here, they are emboldened and must be saying to to themselves "We can get away with anything".
That's why the Bush administration values loyalty without question or conscience, over what is truly in the best interest of the American people.
John Dean has it righ in his book:

agree, even though many in the Republican party may still be moral and just people.. there is only so long you can call yourself the party of morals and have child molesters and corruption come out of your party before people become fed up with the hypocrisy of it all. It may not be all of their faults but they will all take the blame for it.. it's how it works. It wasn't that long ago that the Republicans came to power simply because the Dems who were the "party of the people" became corrupt and lost themselves. Now it is their turn on the top of the heap again.

Agree, Republicans came to power do to the fall of the Democrats (1980 - 1996) in the presidency. and Congress (1994 - 2006). It seems to me that America needs a 3rd part because if the Democrats or Republicans do not get over 50% then they are forced to share power with another party.
I am Green Party if you wish to know.
Moderate Progressive on social issues.
Conservative on states rights, fiscal issues, and foreign aid (policy)

Although I agree with his point, I do not agree with his conclusion. The low approval ratings of the president, who is not a conservative and congress which is not controlled by conservatives proves my point.
People want conservatives like Reagan. That does not mean we have reached the end of a "moral Republican era". We have not been living in a "moral Republican era" we have been living in a "moderate Republican era" and in some cases a "liberal, country club Republican era". That is what is dying an ugly death.
I think that if a truly likable, articulate conservative emerges who can teach and reach the American people, who is filled with Patriotic American spirit and optimism, we will see a Republican landslide like we saw with Reagan. But if what the party comes up with is "democrat lite" they will loose.

A few Republicans do things Democrats have been bragging about doing for decades and you say Republicans are collapsing? What a joke.
The asker here also says that all southern white Republicans are with the KKK. No lie is too low for her to tell.

Now it depends on what context we choose to view this in. If we are talking about politicians in the Republican party I would say that by and large they have abandoned the conservative base. However, if we are talking about Republican voters I would say no. The core constituency which considers itself to have traditional conservative views have not changed, but once again have been abandoned by their leaders.

Lets see, pretend to be a republican and say horrific things about the republicans. Latest democratic strategy? They have been saying reps are bad, bad, bad forever. Its apparently not working good enough so they try this tactic. Seen it many times recently.
