AUSTRIA vs. AUSTRALIA ?
Don't confuse small side issues with the major problems between European nations.
Sure there were conflicts over colonies but "M.A.I.N." is considered the CAUSE of the war.

Sorry to say I think you have the wrong end of this particular history stick.
The Great War was instigated with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and went spiraling out of control from there.
Re the British selling the Australians ships, seeing as Australia was a member of the British Commonwealth they were as entitled to buy ships from Britain as any other nation and more so than most, indeed if you look at the RAN ships up until the mid 80's you will see the majority were either British built or British designed and built under license.

I did not know that. Still, England didn't Have to supply the weapons that the Aussies were going to use to attack the Germans in the South Pacific. (I never thought I'd ever type such a sentence...)
So it sounds like England may have already desired a conflict with Germany... Anyway. That was near to 100 years ago. All dead now. Hard to care.

Interestingly, the first British troops deployed in the first world war were deployed to Mesopotamia.
But there was a lot of skullduggery going on at the time, and Germany was a late starter in the Empire building game. So, there was a lot of trepidation of Germany's colonial ambitions in Africa and the Southern hemisphere. However, I can't recall any hostility until the actual conflict kicked off in Europe.

I didn't know any of that! That was one cause of the war, but the proxy war begun in the Balkans following the assassination of the Archduke of Monte Negro was the main cause. Russia backed Serbia, Britain backed Croatia, and it escalated from there. But the incidents in the South Pacific must've been significant too.

It was Austria, Einstein!
You can also ask ANY WWII veteran from the Pacific about this! Those who served in the European theatre tend to want to forget that the War continued in the Pacific AFTER Germany threw up the white flag!

I think you've been reading David Atwell's "Alternative History" haven't you?
For "Alternative History", please read "wrong"!
Australia did not invade German New Guinea until after Britain had declared war on Germany, so this could not have been one of the reasons why World War 1 started.
