There are a variety of occurrences in which terrorism has been a successful tactic to achieve legitimate objectives. I suggest looking into the independence of Algeria and role of the NLF. Watch the film The Battle of Algiers by Pontecarvo.
You could do a quick overview of terrorism as legitimized by history, including the Boston Tea Party, the murder of Nicholas I, the French Resistance. You could compare such instances with terrorism that has been condemned so far and reach some interesting conclusions.
You could compare terrorism by states and terrorism by small groups. Chomsky's "The CUlture of terrorism" is very good on that subject. It compares the US press' denounciation of Arab terrorism with its support for US sponsored terrorism in Central America. I also read a good review of Buda's Wagon, about the history of the Car Bomb. It is supposed to be very good.
Somebody pointed out SDS... i would definitely look into the Weathermen and the Panthers. They were ineffective, that is true, but their efforts were certainly welcome. There is plenty of material about both.
Terrorism is an interesting subject, I hope you have fun writing about it. I also hope you realize the difference between terrorism against us and terrorism by us. It is a lesson you cannot forget.
Peace.
