So many times the similar question cos it is confusing.
Having official papers from Gibraltar I can categorically confirm that Gibraltar is a British city. It is part of GB and it is part of the UK.
Look at any UK passport and it says "the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland".
So you have proof that the UK = GB + NI.
But also consider what are the lesser known components of GB. Scotland, Wales and England of course for the core. Isle of Man has separate government as do the Channel Isles (and for that matter Gibraltar) and all these are part of GB too. You remember the Falklands war? Why? Cos they too are British.
Many other countries who explored the world have similarities with this. Spain has Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa. France and Portugal have enclaves as do the Dutch.

The official name of this country is United Kindom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , so when you said UK or Great Britain , you named one state. Britannia ( island) was a provice of the Roman Empire . This state have four ,,statal entityes '' : England( in south and central of the island), Wales ( in west), Scotland ( in north), Northern Ireland ( in north-east of Ireland). Gibraltar is one of the southest point of Europe, is a strait between Europe and Africa , or between Mediteranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Gibraltar is a small state who is controlled today by UK ,through a governor( because this strait and this state represent a strategic places)

I always thought the UK included the islands , eg, channel islands, Orkney islands Isle of Mann, etc, who have in effect their own governments, whereas GB is the land mass including England Scotland and Wales and , someone will correct me I'm wrong, Northern Ireland
As for Gibraltar, Britain has sovereignty over it, like other Islands dotted around the world, Falklands etc.
Think they had a claim on Cypress at one time too....who knows why..
lilstar. ROI is NOT part of Great Britain, it is in the British Isle, a geographical feature, which is very different to GB

Gibraltar, as well as Falcklands and Northern Ireland, is the twilight of an old and decadent empire. Obviously the population of those countries desire to remain British because the local population population was expelled when they were conquered by the British.

great britain is Scotland, England, Wales & ROI but doesnt include Northern Ireland, the UK is known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and includes NI.
As for Gibralter:
As an overseas territory of the UK, the head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who is represented by the Governor of Gibraltar. The UK retains responsibility for defence, foreign relations, internal security, and financial stability. The Governor is not involved in the day-to-day administration of Gibraltar, and his role is largely as a ceremonial head of state. The Governor officially appoints the Chief Minister and government ministers after an election. He is responsible for matters of defence, and security. On 17 July 2006, Sir Francis left on HMS Monmouth leaving the symbolic keys of the fortress of Gibraltar with the Deputy Governor. A new governor, Lt General Sir Robert Fulton KBE, replaced Sir Francis Richards in September 2006[6].
The Government of Gibraltar is elected for a term of four years. The unicameral Parliament presently consists of fifteen elected members, to be increased to seventeen at the next election. The speaker is appointed by a resolution of the Parliament.
