Bud Selig as the commissioner of baseball owes to the game to be there.even if he is a stupid dick and does not want to do because Barry is about to break his buddies record. He is already the most laughable commissioner in all of sports why would he want the public criticism of not being there when the most hallowed sports record of all time falls, possibly in his own back yard.

If I were Seligula, I'd resign in disgrace, followed by a public apology for my entire life, and concluding with ritual suicide.

Ahem.

While I really don't care what he does, and Kuhn's utter bumbling of not showing for Aaron's big night gives him automatic cover, I do think the commissioner (which right now happens to be Selig) has a responsibility to the sport to represent at historic occasions. Now, no one much showed up when Henderson set records for walks and runs scored, or when Bonds passed Rickey in walks, and I don't know if Ueberroth was in the house when Rose took down Cobb. And I don't recall Selig being there when Hoffman surpassed Smith. Point is, career records do fall now and then, and no one raises this "the commish should be there" fuss except for the home run event, for which we have the one previous occurrence without the big guy present.

I think he should be there, but if he's not the event will be no poorer for his absence.

I mean, we're talking SELIG here. How much does he improve the event?

Ok ain't Bud Selig from Milwaukee? If so, since the Giants are playing there, and I hope Selig is there, and Barry ties and or breaks the record just to tick Selig off. Maybe Bonds was resting the 3 games against the Cubs just so he could make sure Selig would be there? lol

Since there is no proof...real proof...that Bonds did steroids, I'd say he should go. MLB has trouble defining reality. When Big Mac broke the single season record...and he was a man who ADMITTED taking performance enhancing drugs...MLB was all over every at bat. That was ridiculous, and I did not appreciate having the game I was watching interrupted every time he came to the plate. Especially because I know Roger Maris is still the single season HR king.

So now, we come to Barry Bonds. Who was a legimate Hall of Famer before any of the steroid issues came up. Did he cheat? Well, I think it's pretty obvious that he did. Did MLB allow him to cheat? Yeah, that's pretty obvious too. Bud is making a grandstand play at morality here. But if he and MLB had any sense of morality, they would give back all the money the fans paid to see steroid infested ballplayers hit home runs. Because they should have done something about it then. Instead of making symbolic statements about it now. It was OK when the cash rolled in. So give the devil his due. Barry Bonds will be the home run king regardless Bud. Unless you are willing to strip him of the title, you need to watch him break the record.

I would. I think it's his job to be there. Cheating or not cheating, he's gonna break the record and Bud Selig needs to be there. If it turns out Bonds used steroids then Bud Selig can just say ,"I didn't know" But if Bonds is clean, what will he say about not being there.

Selig will never have a second chance to make the right decision, and that decision should have him in the ballpark when Bonds breaks the record. I believe anything other than Selig at the game would be a bad decision for him representing MLB. Should Bonds find himself in trouble in the future, no one will care that Selig was there when Bonds broke the record.

If I was Bud Selig I wouldn't know what to do because I'd have my underqualified head up my rearend. That being said, I think the commissioner of baseball should certainly be in the stands when the most coveted record in all of sports is broken. Regardless of the inferences, Bonds has not been proven guilty of anything but having a massive ego (to go along with his massive head). So, show up, participate in whatever ceremony is planned, and try and smile.

I would go to see it for the matter thats its a major feat in Major Leauge Baseball as a league. Not for the fact that a man full of steroids for about five years of his career is about to own a record. If you don't wanna go out of disrespect to the player, at least have the will to wanna go for the respect of the league. The record will not stand long anyway. Within the decade, he will be attending another record breaking game when Alex Rodriguez breaks Barry Bonds Record, followed by the possible chance of Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard (Who is the fastest player ever to reach 100 home runs; whats holding him back is that he started in the league late, currently at the age of 27; lot of catching up to do.)

Nah. The commish's responsibility is to the sport, not to any single player. Records are broken frequently and the Commish never shows.

Following Barry around the country sends a bad message. A lame pre-arranged phone-call from the commish is good enough.

Yes I would go. I would tell him how great an accomplishment it was. Then I would announce to the crowd that I thought neither Aaron or Bonds were the true home run king. Then I would declare Ruth the true king. It took Aaron 4000 more at bats to get just 41 more homeruns than Ruth. It took Bonds almost 2000 more at bats than Ruth to do the same.
