A new series is created whenever there is a new Secretary of the Treasury. A letter is added if the treasurer changes while the same Secretary is in office. The treasurer doesn't change very often so a 'B' note isn't very common but it has happened.

A new series with the same date is created when there is a minor change to the bill, such as the signature of the Treasurer or the signature of the Secretary of the Treasury. The relative value of each series depends on how many bill were created and survive for the series. If there are fewer bills available with a given date and a "B" suffix, the series will be more valuable. If there are more bill available with a given date and a "B" suffix, the series will be less valuable.

For example, consider $2 United States Notes.

There are series of 1928, 1928A, 1928B, 1928C, 1928D, 1928E, 1928F and 1928G. Of these, the series of 1928B is most valuable because there are fewer available.

There are series of 1953, 1953A, 1953B and 1953C. Of these, the series of 1953B is least valuable because there are more available.

A series with a B suffix is not uncommon. The easies way to get one would be simply to check bills you get.
