I agree. This case has much more to do with Americans insatiable desire for Celebrity news! However, I do not agree with cruelty of animals and certainly not the inhuman execution of the animals when they are deemed noncombative enough for the owner. Yet, this is still a story which cannot and should not hold a candle when in comparison to the taking of innocence from a child. In my city, last week a robber was given 140 years for his crime against an elderly lady but a 25 yr old confessed child molester was only given 40 and 15 of those were suspended! He'll be home in 25 yrs. His victim was a 12 year old boy! Sad!

Not to take away from the importance of what you say but most of the people out there that commit these kind of crimes started off by abusing animals and worked their way up. At the time they were doing this, just maybe, if it had been given more importance, they may not have continued up the ladder to abusing people. However, a lot of people seem to just shrug animal abuse off as "growing pains" or whatever.
PETA is far too radical for me. I belong to a few animal groups and the president of one of them actually got a few people arrested for child abuse because of what she saw in the homes while interviewing these people for animal adoption. She would go in and while interviewing for the adoption would notice certain things about the kids, etc. She would contact social service and they would investigate.
So while I agree that laws on sex offenders and rapists should be more severely punished - up against the wall and shot to prevent them from doing it again as they most likely will - I think animal abuse should be taken more seriously also. This Vick person should also be investigated by Social Services. This was being done at his home - does he have kids? Were they exposed to this?

Well...the vick story is the one at hand right now...its the most current! Dog fighting and its status has never fully gotten the attetion that it deserves....Yes..we ALL know our sex offenders get off w/ nothing and many people have tried to change that and failed and now a DIFFERENT type of crime is front and center...its a crime that no one discusses and it needs to be discusses...our animal abuse laws in particular, dog fighting, are VERY lax....I mean electrocuting a dog just b/c it lost a fight or is not ready to fight...that is just discusting and shows lack of a conscience and lack of morals! Animal cruelty has probably got one on the most easiest sentences there is...most perps get away w/ just a fine and then a few wks later are back at it....(even a few days) Its gross and FINALLY america is getting a chance to understand just how disgusting the dog fighting/cock fighting rings are!
So, its not that nobody cares about our sex offenders, its just that this issue is finally getting the attention it deserves....

Chloe, would you please learn how to use a computer and stop hitting "return" at the end of lines like it is a typewriter!?
What does loyalty have to do with this issue? What about the 96.7% who do NOT repeat offend? Do you want to keep them in prison forever? Heck, should we then keep all drunk drivers in prison for the rest of their lives because they are likely to drive drunk again? After all, how may children do drunk drivers kill every year?
You group "sex offenders" into one big group as if there are no differences between them. Isn't there a big difference between a person who visits a prostitute who is 15 (but looks 25) and someone who molests the neighbor's child? Of course there is.
Also, let's face it - juries make mistakes sometimes. Innocent people can go to prison for things they did not do. DNA evidence has freed hundreds of people wrongly convicted of many crimes by juries. Children can also lie for many reasons. Some adults are as obsessed with this issue as you seem to think others are with the Vick dog-fighting story. Some see child molesters behind every tree and in every day-care. Frankly, it concerns me that YOU are so obsessed with child molestation. What's up with you? Should you be in prison to protect the children? So, is it ok for YOU to simply decide that people accused of a particular crime should never have any hope of being free again? No, it is not ok.
Luckily we have a legal system in this country that does not follow your simplistic rules for justice.

3.3% of 4,300 is only 142 people.
Considering there's 300 million people in the united states
as of 2006... 142 is a low number of repeat offenders.
Some people are put into prison for "child molestation"
eventhough they were both consentual about it at the time.
Sometimes the girl ages 16-17 IS consenting, and the
boyfriend dumps her or something else happens, then she
blows the whistle on him for rape, etc, out of spite...
This has happened too often, and the girl is always viewed
as a rape victim eventhough there are witnesses to say
that they had been dating, and it was consentual.
I dont see these particular guys as criminals, but they
are always viewed as such..
But yeah, there are lots of actual rape victims out there,
but just as in the rehab business, the justice system
doesnt work for everyone. The person has to actually
WANT to change his/her life in order for it to happen.
Someone could be jailed for 20 years for rape charges,
then come out and within 6 months be back in jail for
yet another rape charge.. then there's people who go
to jail for rape for 1 year, get released, and never get
sentenced again in their entire lives.
Everyone's different and I dont think there can EVER be
a system that is 100% certain that the criminal won't have
another offense after release.
But you can't just keep everyone in jail for the rest of their
lives just because they *MIGHT* repeat the offense. Once
they serve their time, they're free to do what they want,
whether it's change their lives for the better, or worse.
No one can predict what someone will do once they
get out of jail.
So yeah, 142 people out of 4300 is a decent number.
Im sure we could do better.. but it will cost even more tax
money. Are you sure you want to pay it?

I have to agree, heck one judge even let a pervert out because he was too short to be "safe" in jail. Excuse me? Damn perverts have more rights than the victims and the potential victims? Something is rotten with the system.
I guess the whole Vick thing is supposedly interesting simply since a multi millionaire, a so called adult who gets paid to play a game, would blow it all on such a stupid senseless activity.

One reason, Michael Vick is a celebrity. Of course he's going to get more attention than the average rape-victim, though it's very sad to say.
