Okay, here is my day.
We had a matsuri in town (GOOD) we had one 2 weeks ago also (good) and another one in two weeks. (good) I love the summer festivals.
Heaps of people were going to be there, so I had to rush off to the 100en shop to get some random supplies for my shop. 100en shop is so handy and anything you need (good)
The lady counted out my change (good) but did it 2mm from my eyeballs and really slowly. (bad) but I was in a hurry to get back to my shop. I went to put my shopping in my bags. she came over and said to wrap my breakables in the newspaper. Normally a good, but she didnt need to wazawaza come over and show me, I can understand her perfectly. assuming all foreigners dont understand Japanese (bad) but making an effort (good)
Rode my bike back into town (good?). Had a great day (good) and heaps of customers came and sold a mountain load of stuff (good).
My shop is on the main road and so everyone at the matsuri was right outside my shop(good) and we have a public toilet in our shop and trillions of people came streaming through (buying on the way) (good good good!)
2 boys sitting at a table watching the introduction dvd to New Zealand. I went over and had a chat and we became instant best buddies. (good)Wandered around the matsuri with them and everyone is relaxing all on the street, and drinking (bad) but music is good and drums and fundoshi wearing men are playing tug of war (good) but when I took a photo one guy picked something up and now his bum is in the middle of the photo (bad).
Was looking at a stall and a guy asked my friends if I was an exchange student (bad) I answered him and said no I own a company just down the road from here. then we chatted about various stuff and he was a really nice guy (good)
Ate some yakitori with my new friends(good)
He called his girlfriend for me and I spoke to her on his phone. She thought he was playing a joke on her, even though I was like, no Im a gaijin from New Zealand. she didnt believe me, and thought it was one of his friends.
Anyway exchanged numbers and keitai addresses with super cool Japanese cellphone powers (good)
Came home, and text them and made appointments to hang out another day.
Okay, I love Japan and its people. But I dont like to be patronisd and people assume I am a clueless gaijin. (people who dont know me, shop attendants people on the street etc)
Come to Japan, it awesome. Wow, this got really long.

Good: most food is way healthier than American food, so it's not so dangerous to eat out all the time; friendly people, transportation seems convenient, clean, organized, most things within walking distance, MY BOYFRIEND!
Bad: crowded, humid, some small tasks like going to the bank take you half a day, language barrier, some people are uncomfortable around foreigners, some foods are downright yucky (natto), no clothing for women like me who are a bit big, no shoe sizes for women 8 1/2 and bigger, a lot of fashion is downright ugly.

Gee, the UK must be all KKK...scary...
Good: 1.Transportation
2.Weather
3.Culture and art
4.Unique history
5. Great ethnography
6.Nature
7.Many tourist spots, well developed tourism
8. Superb human relationship (generally speaking)
9. The moral is much much higher than in Europe
10.Consequiently, the country is safe, low crime rate
11. maybe the cleanest country in the world
The list could go at least to 100, but lets stop here
Bad:
1.The attitude towards foreigners
2.Racial discrimination and prejudices( when you speak perfect Japanese and stay here for 6years, you have enough of it)
3. The attitutde towards women (regard them as sexual objects)
4.Pure nation dream (this is little bit Nazi...)
5. Cosmetics not always fits non-Asians,( develop alergy) which , especially for women, can be extremely painful disatvantage.
6The honne-tatemae thing
7. Japanese don't think lie is bad. On the contrary, they think it is an essential part of the culture.
8. Dishonesty ( sneaking, gossiping, speaking behind one's back)
9.Plagiasm is not a crime

I lived in Japan for several years adn the good far outweighed the bad.. too many good htings to list, but food and cultural arts tops the list.
The one bad that really stood out for me, and I think f or any western person living there, is that Japanese culture does not allow you to really make true friends. You will never be drawn into your Japanese friend's family and feel that kind of "like family" friendship you can grow and nurture in the west. There will be a type of wall that you can not penetrate. And hte "losing face" mentality will stop you from knowing someone intimately. In general , just a lack of passion pervades.

Good: Friendly people (once you show some humility), food, drinking, beaches, few worries about firearms, excellent schools
Bad: Cramped/expensive living conditions, busybodies, occasionally intolerant people, waiting for a taxi that will pick me up once they see I am Gaijin, waiting for someones butchered English to finish when my Japanese is 10X better, ignorant foreigners who shouldn't be allowed off the military base (not all, just that 10% does it for me)..

Predjudice of Gaijin--I don't think it has anything to do with the war like you said. Japan is 98% Japanese and 2% Foreigner. They just have a hard time with the small number of outsiders.

The good for me is..the Japanese food I'm not tired of, snack, the shopping, the good original anime, the crazy game shows they have, the people I meet, the vending machines, convenience stores, restaurants, 100 yen stores ( I once spent close to the equivelant of $700 dollars there)
The bad for me is..crazy full Japanese mother, not enough white guys around unless around base, strict base rules, being so far away from America, kanji, the "eeeeee" experssion after every suprising thing they hear kinda irritates me haha,
