Depends on what you want to do with the computer.
Workstations are usaually more powerful than laptops.
Laptops are designed to be mobile and yet still be able to work. so consideration is given to power use over the performance. The processors used in laptops generally the (M's) are such that they perform slower than their workstation counterparts (D's) so as to conserve more power. the video graphics of laptops also are quite less capable as compared to the desktops or workstations. this is because if laptops were to display more detailed graphics they would consume their battries in a few moments.
another point is that desktops or workstations can have their partse easily upgraded, more than you can upgrade a laptop, so if you are the always want to be up to date guy then consider a desktop or workstation more than a laptop. infact you can upgrade every part of a work station including the mother board. but with laptops a few components can be upgraded.

so for speed, power, more graphics details, gaming, movie and larger sizes of hard drive and memory upgrades and general upgrading go for workstations,

but for mobility, getting the work done, non essential on power, graphics and such and non upgrading , go for laptops..

Good Luck and God Speed.

Usually the spec is much much better on a Desktop than a laptop, thing is with a desktop you need space with a laptop you don't , and the laptops processor speeds are not as good
pc world are doing one for £300 an Advent [omg spare me]
only 256 ram and 40hdd, but for just a bit more you can get a pc with more than double the spec anddd most pcs can be upgraded, ok i'll be off now i just wish you gave some details but alas there was none, this is what i believe and experts would say same. But don't use ebay to buy your first, Dell are good and then theres the Dell outlet, also MorganComputers.co.uk have some bargains and also sell laptops too, Mesh are good too but more expensive than Dell but it depends on your budget.

I'll try to sum it up for you as best I can... Here are the straight up facts...

Laptops are more fragile, can break easily, is more expensive to fix if it does.

Desktops break less, are EASY to fix, you can do it yourself, and its not at all expensive...

Laptops are ALWAYS slower than desktops, because they can only fit so much inside of the laptop (NOT to say you cant get a really fast laptop, but you have to spend decent money).

Desktops are easily SELF upgradable, they have plenty of room for upgrades/addons, they are generally much faster because they can hold more.

Laptops = more expensive
Desktops less expensive...

#1 If you get a laptop, it is worth the extra 200 bucks to get a 3 year warranty... If a laptop is going to break or die, it usually happens in the first 3 years, so get that warranty, and just like cars, some laptop models are just crap.

#2 If you really wont be bringing it or needing it wherever you go, just get a desktop...

#3 Make sure whichever you buy, you get some type of DUAL CORE processor, as you cannot beat the speed...

If you are a first timer... I recommend the following for a laptop... This one is cheap pricewise, but has decent internals, and it will be very fast. (Its on sale)... It will also suit everything you need it for at work

put a search in on answers and see how many people write in with problems on laptops, there are still so many problems and they are not really as versatile as most people would like us to think, the only advantage is that laptops are more portable, if this is not so important then go for a workstation/desktop. take care and good luck.

If you are talking brand names, there are all basically the same. The most important components are The processor and the hard drive.I would go for the Intel Duel core processor ( 2 Ghz) and the SEAGATE (250 GB ) HARD DRIVE.If you are into gaming, get a good Graphic card with 512 MB of hipermemory.Be sure you get plenty of RAM,( Ihave 1027 MBs in my computer. You don't have much choice in the OS,because most PCs have Windows Vista now,but you can probably get Windows XP instead.A lot depends on what sort of tasks you will be doing.Just remember,Intel Duel core processor and a 250 GB hard drive.

If you're not willing to look at a Mac of some sort, basically anything that will run the usual suspects (i.e. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator) without slowing down should do the trick. Be sure to get a decent amount of RAM (≥2GB these days) and darn good antivirus/antispyware/antietcetera software.

Depends for what your looking for. Laptops are mobile and take up less space. PC's can be used more for gaming. It's really a matter of preference.
