You might not know what type of memory you have if you've never thought about it because you don't have anything to compare it to. There are some things you can do to test yourself. Remembering every detail in a room vividly has a part to do with it but not everything. that could just depend on how observant you are. It's HOW you remember every detail in the room. Do you scroll through the items or do you see whats like a photo in your mind of the room with the items as if you were still standing in it? When someone mentions a name of someone you know do you automatically get a feeling of your thoughts towards that person or do you see them almost like watching a video doing something you remember them doing the exact way it happened wearing what they were wearing at that exact moment. Or have you ever read a book and sworn years later that it was a movie you had seen, even if that book was never made into a movie?

Believe me if you had a photographic memory you would know. it's not all that common, but it's sort of weird when it happens. I will admit that I've heard a lot of different things regarding photographic memories. I know that at times I seem to have one, but I can't guarantee when it will kick in and it's really weird. I remember sometimes at work I would look at a page of names and it would just become like a snapshot in my brain and I could tell you where anything was on that page. Or I can remember happenings and events perfectly that happened years ago, that freak out the people I was with.
But then, sometimes I can't remember if I took my pills in the morning, I have no memory at all. So, go figure.

You will know, when you can routinely describe something in great detail.

For example - can you describe the instrument panel in your car to us right now, without going to the car? List the gauges from left to right. Include the warning lights, any insignia, markings, etc, but don't tell us the make and model. If you do it well enough, someone who drives the same make and model should be able to recognize it and tell you what it is.

Can you describe a place you've been to with rich details? If not, you don't have a photographic memory...

That is a new twist. I don't think you Would know it as different from the rest of us unless someone told you. I like that thought. Perception is Everything!!
