I would not reject the use of "unus" in this instance.
My source (a) states "unus is often emphatically used for solus". (b) "used for solus ,of that which is alone, by itself"
There are three reasonable ways to translate the phrase in question.
numquam solus ,numquam unus , numquam solitarius (masculine forms)
and if you want to get across the meaning "left in the lurch" use "destitutus"
