In our society today I am ashamed to admit it, but it seems that in some ways manners have not been as forefront as in the days of old. I still have doors opened for me, and depending upon where I am going (how dressy the affair), chairs might be pulled out. My significant other is very, very sweet about getting things for me. I crave ice all the time and he ensures my ice cup is full throughout the night. He is not much on cooking, but he can make a helluva sandwich and fried potatoes - he says he just prefers my good cooking, and marvels at how quickly I seem to be able to put a nice, complete dinner together and do the dishes at the same time! While he's eating I'm planning our dessert and a movie. He compliments me on my hair and clothing. He alway kisses me and wishes me a good day.
My problem with manners is 'other people'. I hate to see men in a restaurant with their hats on. People have gotten away from 'dressing' for the occasion, and often casual is inappropriate for some restaurants and affairs. I loved the 40's and 50's when men were men and women dressed like women.
I still believe in 'please and thank you' and often I have to teach my students basic manners when they come into a classroom and a teacher is in the process of instruction - just to burst in is wrong. Even among themselves, they don't have manners and courtesies.
Lately, I have found that if I pull something out to snack on - I am bum rushed by 4-5 students with their hands out - begging. In my day, you never asked anyone for their food.
Aw we as knowing adults have a long way to go.

If I opened the door - he'd think I was leaving
if I pulled the chair back as he wen to sit down he'd fall on the floor
If I got up and made breakfast in bed - i wonder why my kitchen was in my bedroom
If I walked him to the door after his date - I would want to know why i'm being two timed.

I almost always walk him to the door unless it's 6am and he's leaving to go home and get ready for work. If he didn't work so early, I would totally make him breakfast in bed.
When dealing with people in the public, however, I think that manners have gone by the wayside. My son is 13 and I've told him many times that you need to treat the people who are providing a service to you with kindness. For example, if he's totally rude to a waitress she might spit in his food. Some of my friends think it's terrible that I would tell him something like that, but not only is it true, it's important to treat EVERYONE with respect. I've worked customer service jobs where I've been totally crapped on by the public and it sucks.
Maybe it's just that human decency has died.

No, Sir, they are not dead...at least not dead in my eyes.
yes, I do open the door, but I open it for everyone else.
I pull the chair back for everyone who sits at my table
I make them whatever whoever wants when they want it, if it makes sense.
I always walk my date to the door.
_________
Of course, these remarks sound strange coming from a girl...but I'm still a good person.

i feel they are.. my husband open all my doors and orders my food i let him know what i want and he does the ordering.. he pulls my chair and put his hand on the curve of my back when we are walking.,. he walk on the out side that mean he is by the street.. then there are the thank you and please.. he thinks of me and then will bring something home like a candy bar.
to day all i see and hear are ill-mannered kids with no thought to others just what they want to and what they want to say.. i like to see manners come back in style..

Not in this family, not using the examples you have, but we still say please, thank you, excuse me etc.
I think opening a door for a woman depends on location. The small town where I use to live everyone still said hello, held a door etc. Now that I am in a city it is a rarity.

Definitely not dead in me. I also enjoy making her dinner, since she works an evening shift. Picking her up from work, especially when the weather is bad. Giving her my jacket when she is cold. I call when I'm going to be late. Just to name a few. So yeah they're still alive and well.
