I want to do a mailing. Should I hire a marketing company so that I can get it right first time? What would the cost be?

Only outsource it if you can't do it yourself. Customers should understand if it's not 100% professional or whatnot.

Ask yourself what the clients are looking for from your product or service, and use that.

It really depends upon the product and the target market. Mailing works OK for some products/clients, but poorly for others. If you're thinking about hiring a marketing company, get their advise on how to market, and not just simple tell them to do a mass mailling. There are dozens of ways to promote, and if they're good, they'll be able to tell you what's best for your specific situation.

Don't waste money with mailing. Most people don't read all the mailings they receive. What is looked at most are supermarket flyers and large department store flyers. Mailings are very expensive.
If you are doing mass marketing, I suggest to open a web site and promote it. Networking is the proven way to get your product known. Than of course, you need to publicize your site. Anyway, this is the way to go. It is a lot cheaper than mailings or newspaper ads.
