Well, I have an advantage...I live just a couple of miles from the World's Largest Surf Shop" (yes Ron Jon's) and they sell all types of surfing equipment.
Okay, this isn't a serious question. But, just in case it is...I do know one version of how the term came about.
No matter what Al Gore claims the internet was alive and functional well before his time. It was reserved for scientist to share information. It seems that one of these stated he wasn't happy about sharing information this way...those reading his conculsions could just skim over the facts and not understand them. It is just a like a surfer they see the wave and understand how to surf it, but have no idea what creates it.
Now, if this story is true...I think he had a very good understanding of what would happen. We have all kinds of experts on many subjects with no true understanding of the subject. In other words it is not reliable.

Get out a little board and place it on your keyboard. Then carefully, using your fingers as legs, wait for the next wave. I haven't actually mastered it yet as my computer just doesn't seem to be very active in wave production. I was thinking it was a bit weird though as I have never heard any electrocution stories about people who surf the net. I dunno. Maybe they're just really skilled. I once met someone who said that they met a guy on a bus who said that he actually SAW someone successfully surf the net but I didn't meet him myself so I don't know if it's actually true. Apparently his name was Ed but someone else said it was actually Bernard. Someone else told me that the whole thing just isn't possible and that it's some sick joke. Everyone here was talking about it last month. I know I'll still be on the lookout for Bernard myself. Good luck though.
