Black is a fairly unstable color in goldfish. I bought several a while back that had black fins, and one that had a black "moustache" that faded in time. Show your non-believing husband this website that documents (with photos) the color change of a black moor into a mostly orange one: http://thegab.org/Articles/ColorChange.html

Hi Lisa, this is quite normal in Goldfish as their pigmentation is extremely unstable & can vary quite unexpectedly between a wide range of colours including yellow, black, brown, olive & silver as well as orange. My large male Comet spent the first 4 & a half years of his life almost completely orange. This Summer not only has his underside turned silver all the way from his mouth to the base of his tail with broad stripes behind each gill but this week a silver band is appearing across his snout. To see pictures of him before & after it would be difficult to believe mine was the same fish too!

My goldfish used to have black spots, but now they're gone. I used them to tell him apart from the others, but I figured a different way out instead.
