The British Public elects the Hosue of Commons and the Leader of the Majority party becomes Prime Minister, and if a Prime Minister resigns, then a new party leader becomes Prime Minister till next election.

The Queen is able to appoint a Prime Minister in an emergency (last time she had to do this was in 1976).

The public elected the labour party as opposed to the presidential style of electing a leader.
This enables the elected party to put forward their own selected leader before a new election. As in this case.

I would be more concerned that Gordon Brown has stood by Blairs decisions for 10 years, yet now ,driven by the lust for popularity,he seeks to change many of Blairs policies.

So which is it Gordon?Did you agree with Blairs policies? In which case ,why are you changing them?Or did you disagree? In which case, why didnt you speak out and have the guts to resign? Is it because you sold your principles for a shot at the PMship?
In any of these cases, you have no integrity or honour. You do not put the country before your own career. So you are not fit to serve me or my country.

Because the country choose the PARTY they want to run it.
The PARTY chooses who they want to run the party.
Tony Blair was not elected by his constituency to be Prime Minister, he was elected to be the MP for his constituency.
However many Prime Ministers you care to mention, they all got elected to Parliament then chosen by their party as leader.

No one would be asking this question if Tony Blair had stood down when Labour was in Oppostion, would they?
The rules aren't any different just because Labour are in power.
You don't like it, vote for someone credible who might be able to get enough seats to get rid of them. Not UKIP or the BNP, because they're marginal at best. It's the Tories or nothing for England.
At least Scotland gets a reasonable choice.
SNP all the way. No more Labour cronies.

You don`t elect a Prime Minister, you elect the Party and whoever is the leader at that time becomes the Prime Minister. When he leaves YOU don`t vote for the next leader of that Party the Party decides.
This question has been asked that many times, it`s getting boring!!!

Check your history...

The public elects the party.Party elects its leader as PM.When Blair resigned the party elected Brown as leader and PM.It is perfectly in order in party based democracy.
If the PM was directly elected by the people, then only your question is valid.
Im many counties there is Deputy PM,who will automatically take over when the PM resigns.

In the UK we vote for a party not an individual. The Labour party was voted into power several years ago.

Until the next general election when (hopefully) they will be voted out they are in power and its up to them who leads them. As they are in power, their leader becomes the Prime Minister.

I would mock you for that typo, but we all make mistaks [sic].

When we elected Blair we (1) knew he would leave or get chased out by a mob fairly soon, (2) knew Brown would be crowned in his place, and (3) wanted this to happen. I also agree with the points about electing LABOUR not BLAIR at the last election.
