Get another pair of "polarising" sunglasses from the shop. Hold them at 90 degrees to each other. If no light gets through, both are polarised. If light gets through one or both of them are not polarised. The shop is lying, so leave and go to another shop.

they're not "ploarizing" sunglasses, but the glass had been "polarized", and the light that passes through them will act accordingly. Put them on and look at something bright, or with glare, then turn your head to the side and you'll see the difference.

hold 2 of the glasses infront of eachother at a 90* angle.
if the view turns opaque black the glasses are polarised. (try different angles too)
