yup baking soda works. also what you can do is cut a lemon in half and leave it in the fridge. a small saucer of white vinegar works as well.

Here's an inexpensive and fragrance free solution that is just so much better than baking soda. I found the perfect product for this and know many other people that use it. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Just put a couple in your fridge and freezer. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and Internet at customerservice@innofresh.com.
Definitely worth trying

Clean with soap and warm water. Then wipe with vinegar it will not smell great at first but the vinegar smell will go away. Buy some baking soda an place in the fridge when done.

I would clean the fridge out completely, wipe down the surfaces with a mild soap-dishwashing liquid. Then get rid of the smelly things, put in an open box of baking powder. Vinegar also gets rid of smells, but then it smells like vinegar. LOL

Put an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator. It will take some time...weeks perhaps...but the smell will go away. The odor will be absorbed by the baking soda.

After the baking soda...be sure that all fragrant dips and such are in airtight containers from now on....or a zip lock baggie , at least!
Will save you a bunch of cleanup....the Soda also works in your freezer!
good Luck!
