Yes you can keep only males. Most likely the females you will purchase will already be pregnant. The females can also hold sperm for about 2 months and continue having fry. As sweets was talking about, some females turn into males due to a lack of horomone present in the water. No worries about that if you are going to house only males. BTW the swordtails that change sexes are infertile most of the time.

Live bearers do something that most of the critters in the animal world won't. Sometimes, they will change their sexes. I've heard of someone having 2 female swordtails for 2 over years, couldn't keep a male living for them, so she gave up on keeping males. Then, out of the blue, they both grew swords and became males!!!

My suggestion to you would be, if you don't want fry, don't have live bearers. You can keep males together, and cross your fingers that they aren't desprite enough to change. Or, get you a couple, (male, female or mix) let them breed (even if that requires a sex change - that may be interesting!), but don't do anything special with the fry. There's a good chance they may get eaten up by the other fish, if you don't have enough hiding spots for the fry. Fry are excellent at hiding anywhere they can fit, which is virtually anywhere! If you do end up with surviving fry, give them away! Check with local (small non-chain) fish stores, or try schools, day cares, nursing homes, etc. I'm sure a first grade class would emensly enjoy having live bearers in their class!

Good luck with your tank, and have fun with the live bearers! It's always a great learning experience with them!
