Both mean the same. The difference lies in taking backup with a backup utility and copying remains in copy pasting files at different locations.

Copy - paste may take time whereas backup can be created in a one go and saved at one location with .bkf file extension (which is easy to search)

You can remeber where you have created the backup but there could be times when you forget where you had copied the files.

Copying as file is just that. You are making a copy and placing it in another directory/folder. Backup also copies a file but, it also set the archive bit on the file so that if you have backup software it knows to backup only those files that have the bit set for backup. Most backup software now days allows you to exclude certain files or include certain even if the archive bit set or not.
