Yes, in every supermarket you can buy beer, wine, champagne, and all kinds of spirits: Whisky & Whiskey (you know the difference?), Vodka, Rum, etc...
Maybe interesting to you: most supermarkets sell Australian Wine, and it's cheaper than in Oz :-) But if you want anything from the higher priced segment you'll have to go to a special shop.

I'm in North Carolina, and the state controls alcohol sales through their ABC stores-the only place you can purchase liquor. Wine and beer can be purchased basically anywhere, as long as the store has a permit. There are several states where you can buy alcohol at supermarkets, California and Alaska come to mind.

Yeah I worked for M&S (in Scotland too) and as I was often the only person over 18 on the tills I would have to give younger employees permission to sell someone alcohol. They had to ask for every single transaction involving alcohol.

I live in NZ so you already know the answer. It's great. Like you said, one stop shop and plenty of times it is much much cheaper than liquor stores because they have specials on. Also, they're open 24/7. Very handy indeed.

beer & wine in NC, USA
for spirits you must go to a state run liquor store.
Also, you can distill or brew a certain amount for your own use, but you CAN'T sell it. (legally ha, ha, ha, ha)
