Alexander the Great was certainly one of the greatest. He conquered so many lands at such an early age!
Julius Caesar was not bad either.
In modern times Patton pretty good, although he was crazy.
If anybody said Napoleon, I would get upset. He conquered the Serenissima Republic of Venice, simply because he had convinced the Venitians that he would bring democracy and freedom, then he made a separate peace with Austria and gave them Venice as a peace token.

The greatest military general was Hannibal. The only general to cross the Alps with an army. He held the entire Roman nation at bay and never lost a battle in Italy for 17 years and he was always out-numbered. His tactics and strategy are still taught in military schools today.
He lost his last battle (Zama) to Scipio Africanus, because the Numidians ( his ally and main cavalry) betrayed him, switched sides and went over to the Romans.
His victories at Lake Trasimene and Cannae are to this day
considered two of the greatest military achievements ever.
See sources.

Flavius Belisarius- Byzantine General under Justinian I. Defeated the Persians, Conquered North Africa from the Vandals, Conquered Italy from the Ostrogoths, sent back east to defend Syria from the Persians again, sent back to Italy to fight the Gothic army again, and was pulled out of retirement to defeat an army of Slavs and Bulgars. All of this he did with few supplies and troops and nearly no reinforcements because Justinian was worried he would try and take the throne.

Alexander the Great - by FAR. His victory at the Battle of Granicus, in which he crossed the Granicus with his entire outnumbered calvary to defeat the Persians, i still considered by many historians to be the most strategic and decisive battle ever fought. Although it took him until the Battle of Issus to capture Darius, king of Persia, Alexander's victory and Granicus opened up the entirety of Asia. He controlled the largest empire EVER CONSTRUCTED and his military strategies involving a small right wing calvary making an attack from behind enemy lines has never been successfully duplicated by any other military commander.
