there's a few depending on the level you are at now,
The complete car care manual is a very good start -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/158816439X/?tag=yah.007-21
The Auto-repair for dummies is also highly reccomended -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764550896/?tag=yah.007-21
And for a very basic intro this Collins car basics is a very good cheap book

If you get a Haynes manual for your specific car, you can save an absolute fortune by realising that you don't have to put the car into the garage to do most of the basic maintainance on your car. A decent set of spanners, a socket set and a few different screwdrivers will cover an awful lot of the work.
Haynes do a complete step by step dismantle and rebuild of every part of a car (or motorbike, for that matter!) so garages use them as well as people doing work at home.

Try your local library, you`ll find the staff both friendly and helpful. They will be able to show you what books they have on the subject, and what others are available. That way you get to have a really good look a variety of books without having to spend any money. Once you have found a suitable book[s], you can actually go and buy it/them.

Hi,
get Need for Speed Underground 2 for free here: http://bit.ly/1uSGs1x
The key of the free trial of Need for Speed Underground 2 is to complete every race arriving in the first position. In order to achieve that, you will have to beat all your opponents who drive around the streets of this big metropolis.
It's a very nice game.

Has to be Haynes. I think they have manuals for almost every make of car. They are clear, easy, straightforward, which is exactly what i need! They don't talk down to you, they just explain things, bit by bit. Excellent.

There are many books, of different levels.
I have an earlier edition of Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hilliers-Fundamentals-Motor-Vehicle-Technology/dp/0748780823 ) which is good, but assumes you already have some understanding.
The website "How Stuff Works" (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/ ) is a good place to start, and free - although as it is based in the USA some of the terms are American English rather than real English.
