I would move there in a second. I have visited twice and had a beautiful time on both occasions.
There are areas of the country that have terorist type attacks. But they are usually restricted to the south ends of the country, mainly in Cotabato and down near Zamboanga City. So yes there are some problems, but I would not be too concerned at all. I found the people in Mindanao to be even more gracious and friendly than the other parts of the country, which is hard to believe as people are lovely everywhere. What you will find even more difficult is the amount of poverty you will come across. Just remember the basic rules of travel. Be nice and treat people as equals and dont invite too many people in your house(the same as in your own country). If people know what you have, you may be robbed. More likely at home than Mindanao. Remember that to people who are poor, you appear as wealthy as a king.
And dont openly brag about your wealth or be stupid by showing your cash and valuables around.
Pretty much just normal comon sense behaviour.
I travelled everywhere night, day, alone, with people. I visited slums and other places you would consider dangerous. I dont suggest everyone do that, but the only problem I have ever had anywhere was with two very rude and angry americans in a shopping mall. Just use your common sense and I dont think you will encounter any problems at all.
I would move to Mindanao in a second.

Yes. Absolutely. Without a doubt. Although here is my concern. I just came back from Mindanao 2 weeks ago. I am a mestisa who looks distinctily Americana. But! I had a completely wonderful and safe time making me want to come back to live there permanently! Not all parts of Mindanao are bad. In fact, I travelled across the island and didn't feel unsafe in any part of it. It has a misrepresentation for being unsafe, but from my experiance, having been there 4 times, I think its a misconception. Best of luck to you!

Ayala Land recently launched their residential estate, Alegria Hills in Cagayan de Oro City in Northern Mindanao. It only means that Ayala believes in the regions potential. Robinsons Land also has a residential estate, Hillsbrough Point, also in Cagayan de Oro City. Sta. Lucia also has a residential estate in Cagayan de Oro City and many more. SM City and Robinsons Mall are already operating in Cagayan de Oro City and soon Ayala Mall will follow with the establishment of Alegria Hills.

I do not think these Manila based institutions would be investing heavily in Mindanao if the situation is not safe. If communist rebels attack a military detachment in an isolated part of Quezon Province or in Abra, would it mean that the entire Luzon Island is dangerous? Every province has problems with rebels but not all are affected. Unfortunately when bad things happen in a certain part or province in Mindanao, instead of using the provinces name, the media uses the name Mindanao. If a bomb explodes in Benguet Province, would it be fair to use Luzon Island instead of the province name? When bombs explode in Manila (Rizal day, Valentines, Shell Makati Office bombing), does it mean that Baguio is also dangerous because it is part of Luzon Island?

Yes, if there is some way for me to make a decent living.

Mindanao has always been a land of promise. It has a lot of potential, even better than the dominant island, Luzon.

Those negative perceptions are just that, perceptions. Mindanao is just so huge, and the so-called "untoward" incidents are confined to remote areas. And these can happen anywhere you are.

i definitely would "consider" living in mindanao despite the unstable situation there with regards to insurgencies. It is only sad that the beauty of that region is glossed over with the face of terrorism. If only those people will realize that it would be better to live a peaceful life and if only they would consider the lives of the people affected then, there mindanao would be a better place to live in.

I say consider and it is for the sake of saying that the idea of living in mindanao will stay only as an option until everything there would be peacefully settled.

Mindanao is a very big island. There are places in the island that are considered very safe; no problems with rebels or the Abu Sayaf group. Consider Surigao, Davao, Cagayan, Misamis - these are a few of the peaceful cities I can choose from if I decide to make a home away from home however, I don't think I can exchange my beloved Cebu with any of these beautiful places. Bisan pa pakapinan ug house and lot.

Yes.

I was born and grew up in Mindanao. Where? Think of a song by Asin. True, where I grew up can get really violent, but for the locals, it becomes an ordinary part of life. Perhaps the generation who grew up with the violence will realize that there is a better way of life and change the current perception and live more peacefully.

Peace: that is our family's hope.

Yes, I've been to Glan Saranggani, Pink Island in Zamboangao even in Bonggao, Cagayan De Oro, Iligan Marawi, Siargao and Polomok etc... No storm, rich land, happy people and rich in natural resources and most of all prices are still low. Peace and order is inversely related to economic growth. Give the people jobs and invest there and Mindanao will be more prosperous than Luzon in 20 years time.

Of course. All of my extended family is there. If I had to live in Philippines where else would I go?

And besides not ALL of Mindanao is bad. There are a lot of places that are very safe. You just have to be smart, and not go into the areas that are dangerous.

YES i would... mindanao is not just one place.. there are plenty of places that Mindanao is made up of. there are still places in that island that still law, peace and justice exist. so, why not live on that area rather than on those places with 'bad guys'???
