Also how do you tell which ones are and which aren't?

Discrete molecules are ones that don't brag to others about their status in life and often times, like at dances or parties are off alone in the corner sipping punch and watching other molefules that are not discrete.

Someone beat me to the pun, so I'll try to give a straight answer. Discrete molecules are molecules that are not bound into a crystalline structure. Water molecules for instance are considered discreet in vapor or liquid, but in ice or snow, they are bound to a structure.
