Here is a universal tool that allows you to clear it on both IE and Firefox: http://www.unhsolutions.net/IE-Privacy-Keeper/index.html
To do it manually,
For Firefox:
Click on Tools/Clear Private Data. Then select all the buttons and click "Clear Private Data Now", and viola! Firefox is much simpler that IE.
For IE:
Click on Tools/Internet options. Under browsing history click on "Delete".
Note: This does not delete the Autocomplete history!
Autocomplete is what activates when you type "a" and shows all the websites visited that starts with the letter "a".
To delete the autocomplete history, click on the "Content" tab in your Internet Options, and click on "Settings" in the Autocomplete section. Uncheck "Web Addresses" and all other buttons you would like to clear and click "OK". Click "OK" again, and your Autocomplete history is cleared. To activate Autocomplete again, follow the instructions again and recheck the boxes.

Go to properties, clear history, delete cookies and delete files...thats all.
Set your history days to 0 (zero) so that you dont have the problem over and over again
If its still there check if your PC has a virus....some of the websites have the kinds that wont let you remove them from history. Dont download anything from non-secured links. Clear the viruses and you will be ok!

If you are using Mozilla Firefox, you can delete all history items (including the ones that come up in the address bar when typing in website addresses) by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Delete when in Firefox. A box should come up with a list of boxes you can tick of things to clear.

It depends on how you went to them on how effective deleting the history is. If you typed the addresses in the box at the top of IE, they won't vanish if you delete the history which only works if you've visited by clicking on links.
So in IE, go to tools => Internet options then select Clear History.

click on your 'commence' button/icon. From there>'administration Panel', then >'cyber web ideas' > choose for 'surfing history' then click 'delete' > 'history' > then choose for 'delete history'. Then it will ask, "Delete visited internet site?" choose for particular. and you could discern it from there. with a bit of luck that'll do it.
