Okay, so I am pierced and I am planning on getting some taottoos done (after I've stared at the designs for a year or so and if I still like them). I don't look like everyone else. My hair is pink, and I wear a lot of black. On the other hand, I grew up in the country and my favorite thing is riding horses. So I don't fall under any of the usual stereotypes, not to say people don't try.

I want to know why people seem to discriminate against others that have tattoos/piercings? Tattoed people are just like everybody else, they just had the guts to get artwork on their skin instead of in a picture frame. I have met plenty of tattoed people and the majority are nice and friendly like everyone else. Some are teachers, servers, work in offices and such.

So can anyone on here that has said anything discriminatory against all tattoed people justify themselves? And I mean justify, not just spit and curse at me for bringing up a legitimate question, thanks. I'm here to ask, not to fight.

Bird--Paranoid? Not at all...but there was another recent question about tattooes on here and a good 80% of the answers were discriminatory, mean, and foolish.

Shirlykins--All night you've been attacking people who aren't like you. All I asked for is an answer--not for you to call me dumb and antisocial. I am neither, thank you.

Here's what I'm talking about. Well, not 80% more like 50%, sorry I was wrong there. But still, here it is: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmG2PlKvgtIcgW_QUcPggfTty6IX?qid=20070719230449AAwTH0O&show=7#profile-info-7WjRh8IJaa

I wouldn't say that I discriminate against people with piercings or tattoos, but I just got my first lobe piercings at a tattoo parlor so my friends and I have been talking about it a lot lately. I hope it's ok if I put in my two cents.

SOME PEOPLE only associate piercings and tattoos with negative things (old school Hell's Angels, prison inmates, gang members, loose women, people who don't have respectable jobs--meaning they don't have to look "clean-cut" for work, punk kids who egg their mailbox and deal drugs in the park). My mother, for example, has not had friends with tattoos or body piercings, but her brother got tattoos in prison. So my mother wonders why any normal, sweet, kind person would want to look like a thug or criminal. Now, though he still has his tattoos, my uncle isn't a bad guy, but he has done things in the past that the family is not proud of.

Of course tattoos are also a traditional sailor thing. You know, anchors, hearts with "mom" in them, and eagles. A great uncle of mine had an anchor on his arm, and my aunt never let him live it down. He was apparently drunk and out with buddies while he was in the Navy when he got it. He didn't wear his tattoo with pride, in fact he kept it covered up most of the time. One might say his tattoo signified his irresponsibility with alcohol and the stupidity of his youth.

Anyway, of course many if not most people with pink hair, eyebrow rings, and tattoos are pleasant, ordinary people, but for now, no matter how wonderful those people are, a portion of society is going to discriminate against them. I mean aren't there still people who discriminate against minorities simply because of the way they look. We unfortunately live in a day when people still judge books by their covers. I sincerely hope that we can finally overcome that someday soon. I know I'm trying to do my part.

People get tattoos and piercings for many different reasons ie-to remember someone by or a significant date. So it's not good to judge someone by something thats personal to them.
Some people just don't like to conform or just want a cool/personal piece of artwork to look at on their bodies.

When I was at school (not long ago) most people thought it was very cool to have a tattoo or piercing and I loved having my nose pierced for a while after getting a tattoo also for my 18th. lemme tell you they are very addictive.

All the bad things said are probably from disgruntled work employers who have never been to the city and the only piercing they've come close to is a on a cow.

In the past tattoos and piercings were associated with negative things, such as gangs and prisoners. I think that even though today it has become quite normal for nice people to have tattoos and piercings, there are still people who connect those things with the negatives in the past. They just don't understand why some young, good person would want to make themselves look like those criminals and troublemakers. Much of the older generation still thinks of tattoos and piercings as something really uncool, something to look down on, something that only troublemakers would have. The younger generations think differently though, so I think with time the discrimination will decrease and maybe even disappear one day.

So I completely agree with you. I am getting ready to buck the system by getting a visible tattoo on my wrist. It is a breast cancer tribute tattoo. And I have already made it quite clear to my current employer that I'm getting it done, and there is nothing in the policy against it, so therefore no action can be taken against me. I personally don't understand why they hold things like tattoos and piercings against people. To me it is the same thing as someone being told well I can't hire you because you are black, or because you are gay. It is ridiculous. So my theory is, if someone isn't going to hire me because of my tattoos, or because I have too many holes in my body, then that is their loss, and that's probably not the kind of people I want to work for or with. Yeah Haters! Keep the thumbs downs coming!

First off, I have nothing against people who choose to get tattoos. The other day I was picking my son up from preschool and I couldn't help but to notice all the mothers with noticable tattoos. It wasn't anything too crazy, maybe three or four tattoos.

Then I started to think that I don't recall mothers when I was growing up having tattoos. And if they did, they weren't noticable. Our generation has set up a whole different standard of what parent can look like. Also once this older generation begins to retire, we will also be the one's to decide what's appropriate to wear and to look in the business world.

I don't judge anyone unless I completely understand them. I have 5 tattoos myself and I love them. They make me look unique, like decorations, just the same as people wearing jewelry or dying their hair. I think that some people are just close-minded and have overzealous opinions on what they think the world should be like. Too bad for them, they aren't in charge of the world. So ignore them and enjoy your decorations.

I would say that most people stereotype and think about tattoed people as bad. They think about gangs and prison because in movies you see gang members and prisoners with lots of tattoes and peircings. Hope this helps because i disagree with any discrimination.
