Look at his shoes.

No, joking aside, it would be easy to say that rich people are unhappy because, as we all know, "money can't buy happiness." And poor people, of course, are always content and happy, because humbleness is a virtue and they have love and happiness. God loves poor people. The meek shall inherit the earth, and it is hard for a rich man to enter unto the Kingdom of Heaven.
But, really, little of that is true. I believe that happiness, true happiness, can be independent of money. Your ability to love and be loved should have nothing to do with your checkbook. But it remains true that poverty, more often than wealth, leads to bitterness, resentment, ignorance, hate, and longing for what you don't have. So while money may not buy happiness, and not all people can find happiness in the possessions that money can buy, it does afford people more time and liberty to find and nurture love, without the burden of the feeling that the world has cheated you somehow.
Are the poor really "happier" being poor, or have they just been conditioned to think of acquiring money as a vice, a sin?
“Religion is what keeps the poor man from murdering the rich”-- Napoleon Bonaparte
But, yeah. How to tell a rich man from a poor man? Look at his shoes. And look in his eyes. Rich men have many fewer reasons to feel resentment.

My definition of a rich man is one who has no money but all the love and time in the world for his friends and family. He is always generous and rarely selfish.

My definition of a poor man is one who may have all the money in the world but no time for the people around him. He is always wanting the new gadgets, the new trends and is never happy with what he has.

So therefore I tell a rich man by his warm smile and generous attitude, and a poor man by his rushed days and take-away dinners.

The rich man takes you to a really fancy restaurant and bores you with talk of himself, a poor man takes you on a picnic and thinks only of you.

depend on how you define wealth.

For example, three men sail on a boat with all their worldly possessions, a merchant, a philosopher, and a homeless man. mid way in their journey the ship sinks and with it all their worldly possessions. Who is the wealthiest man of the three? In this sense Knowledge is wealth.

Others argue that love and happiness is wealth, as you cannot buy such things with money.

But for most wealth is having lots and lots of shinny rocks and colorful paper. Big empty houses, fancy cars that sit in a garage, fancy meals with fake friends, and a happy pretend family that's so messed up... yeah that's the life, where every restaurant you go to there's bound to be some jealous person who spits on your meal.
